Shannon, Shannon, and I went into Brooklyn last night to see Counting Crows. They were kicking off the second leg on the Outlaw Roadshow (which sadly excludes Good Old War now). If my records are correct - and I believe they are - this was my 10th Crows show! Teehee teehee!
Shannon (Mu) and I met up with Penn Station and took the subway to Brooklyn together. We met Shannon (Con) at a barbecue place en route to the Williamsburg Waterfront called Mabel’s. Our friend, Camilo, met us there just to hang. It was hot as hell out, so none of us was in a rush to go stand out on concrete waiting for Crows to go on. I usually don’t mind catching opening bands, but that’s only when there’s air conditioning and/or it’s not 100 degrees out! So, we opted to stay at Mabel’s and eat and drink for a couple hours until around 8pm when we figured Crows should be going on soon and it was a teeny bit cooler.
Our estimation was correct. We got there in between bands as Crows were setting up! Perfect timing! We got a spot that was a little further back, but was behind the VIP area so we had a pretty clear view,
Counting Crows played:
Untitled (Love Song) (The Romany Rye cover)
I Wish I Was A Girl (<3)
Hospital (Coby Brown cover)
Anna Begins (DEAD…<3)
Mercy (Tender Mercies cover)
Start Again (Teenage Fanclub cover)
Like Teenage Gravity (Kasey Anderson cover)
Look At Miss Ohio (Gillian Welch cover)
A Long December
Return Of The Grievous Angel (Gram Parsons cover)
Hangin’ Around (with the Outlaw Roadshow)
You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere (Bob Dylan cover)
Holiday In Spain
I’ve been having strong feelings about “I Wish I Was A Girl” lately, but you only get to read them if we’re LiveJournal friends.
"Anna Begins" was the biggest surprise of the night. Ugh. That wasn’t supposed to happen! I’ve heard them play it before, but they hadn’t done it the other two times I’d seen them this year, so it hardly crossed my mind! I love it, though, even if my history with it is a little sordid. I used to relate this song ALL the time to situations with my first big crush back when he was still my big crush (~ 2004 / 2005).Oh, poor, pathetic, 2004 Me. It’s only funny now because it didn’t kill me, but it was almost very not funny.
Everybody groaned at the opening chord to “Colorblind.” Boner killer. But it a good way.
"A Long December." Instead of singing "If you think you might come to California," Adam sang "If you think you might come home to New York City" and I like that way better. He’s a California native who migrated east and seems to really love it and, since I’m sick of the reverse happening in my life, I really appreciate his east coast / NYC love. ["I’m going back to New York City because it got a little sleazy here for me."]
"Hangin’ Around" is usually not a favorite of mine, but they jammed to it last night and brought out everyone from the other bands, so it felt like a party. I think it comes across better live than on record.
"Holiday In Spain." <33
Until it occurred to me that this would be number 10, I wasn’t really thinking about going. Traveling to Brooklyn on a Tuesday night with work at 7am is a bitch, but they always make it worth it!
Now, can I has coffee IV plz?
